With all the negative publiciy of late regarding the closure of book shop after book shop, it is hear warming ro read in The Age  that a NEW book shop is about to open in Melbourne.   To be located opposite the State Library of Victoria in the Melbourne CBD, Warren Bonnett talks of his passionate belief in the value of independent book shops.  He says:

….. the big book chains failed because they ”tried to run bookselling like a supermarket”, catering to the lowest common denominator and isolating niche readers …..

….. Bookstores have an advantage over online outlets because they allow readers to flick through a book, and browse so you might leave with a better book than you sought.

To be called “Embiggen” this book shop is to have a speciality focus on science and popular culture.   The intention is to invite the public to question visiting scientists, poets and philosophers in open forums to be held in the shop.   May Embiggen have a long and successful life in Melbourne!
