There’s nothing nicer than being able to celebrate a day of love!

Library Lovers’ Day, which is traditionally celebrated on February 14th in Australia, is inextricably linked to Valentine’s Day.  Hence most of the fun competitions run in our library have focused around encouraging students to write love poems.  Displays set up have included lots of love themed books and last year one of our displays included a number of love themed books hidden in plain paper bags with very few clues other than to indicate, via blue and pink labels inviting students to jump in and borrow, whether the main protagonists were male or female.   Students enthusiastically borrowed from the pile!

If you’re running short on ideas though, check out the ALIA Library Lovers’ Day page which has stacks of really great ideas!

On the eve of Library Lovers Day, it is apt to focus on the role our Libraries play in the lives of members of our school communities.  Where are we going with all that we’ve spent decades developing?  Is the Library still relevant, needed, of interest and value to the students and teachers in our schools?  What about us – the Teacher Librarians that have been the backbone of our Libraries?  Are our roles evolving or are they becoming irrelevant?  Is the investment of time and energy to explore the new and oversee it’s integration into our Libraries worth the effort?  Are we, our services and our Libraries still valued as they once were?

Contemplation of our collective future can be quite scary ….. and of course ….. threatening.   Do we run from all that we’ve come to know and respect as hallowed within the walls of our Libraries?  Or do we take a stance on how we see and know the future to be?  Should books still populate the shelves of our Libraries as they once did or should books be moved to the ‘stacks’ of archived materials and replaced with new formats?

My passionate insistence of the value of  books and reading keeps me searching, exploring and thinking about all that is out there.   I wonder about the longevity of the book.  Could it be that eBooks are just an evolution of what we’ve known for so long – a repackaging of the old – and that along the way, us, the old hands who intuitively know and understand their value, must repackage not only the books on our shelves, but ourselves along with our presentations.   Ah, yes ….. repackaging …..  someone else has said it well:

Cute ay?!  Happy Library Lovers Day to you all!!
