I’ve been a fan of Dolly Parton for as many years as I can remember.  I just love her voice and the way she presents.  Her personality is so incredibly infectious.

So when I recently learned about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library my admiration of her grew tenfold!  Currently operating in The United States, Canada and The United Kingdom, I was fascinated to read details on the ‘How it works’ page of the Imagination Library website – a program which aims to put a new age approrpirate book every month into the hands of children under the age of five.  What an initiative!

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

So she decided to give a brand new, age appropriate book each month to every child under 5 in Sevier County and send it directly to their home via post. With the arrival of every child’s first book, he or she could now experience the joy of finding their very own book in their letterbox. These moments continue each month until the child turns 5—and in their very last month in the program they receive a special “graduation” book.

An article in the West Australian online news thewest reported on the possibility that the Imagination Library is to be extended to Australia:

On a more serious note, Parton said she is hoping to extend her Imagination Library charity project handing out millions of free books to pre-school children to communities in Australia.

“We’re searching that out and meeting with people,” the 65-year-old said without offering more details.

How very exciting!

Fresh from two inspiring talks last week about intitiatives being explored by the National Year of Reading 2012, I can’t help wondering if anyone from NYOR has been approached or been in touch with those travelling with Dolly Parton.   With her tour of Australia just about to commence, getting an Australian Imagination Library underway could be a wonderful ‘icing’ on the cake for NYOR organizers!
