One senses that Scott Gardner has intentionally told this macabre story in stop motion.  The story slowly unfolds and with each chapter a further chink of necessary information is added to enable us to make sense of both the story and its characters.   Each major event that befalls either an individual or the family described in the story is couched against the backdrop of a world historical fact.  The opening fact is that Saddam Hussein amassing his troops prior to the invasion of Kuwait.  Reading the opening statement on page one sets the scene clearly for the reader.   An interesting writing style.
