International Literacy Day, celebrated each year on September 8th, is nearly upon us.   This international initiative promoted by UNESCO is celebrated throughout the world.  Timed to coincide with the start of the school year in the northern hemisphere, here in Melbourne, this date falls just after national celebrations of ‘Book Week’ in our schools.  With the closing of the Melbourne Writer’s Festival last weekend, it is great to be able to focus on International Literacy Day through programs planned and run by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).   The Great Book Swap – a great program promoted by ILP – has become an easy and satifsfying way to involve our school students in sharing literature while supporting the work of the ILP in providing opportunities to our indigenous population.
