There aren’t too many of us who don’t get that gooey, melty feeling when looking at that cute little character created by A. A. Milne – Winnie the Pooh.

He’s cute, cuddly, adorable and constantly endears himself to us through the pages of Milne’s books.

But ….. did you know that Winnie the Pooh was named after a real bear?  And did you know that that real bear, who lived at London’s Zoo, was visited often by A. A. Milne’s son, Christopher Robin?

The London Zoo bear, a Canadian black bear was called Winnipeg.  Christopher Robin named his teddy bear Winnie, after Winnipeg.  Not too long later, Winnie, along with Christopher Robin, found himself immortalized in the pages of Milne’s books.

It has recently emerged though that the real life bear, Winnipeg, who was a popular attraction at London Zoo until she died of old age in May 1934, suffered tooth decay, partly, it is claimed, because Christopher Robin fed him too much honey!

Winnie-the-Pooh is one of my all time favourite books!  The characters are as cute as and the story lines are beautiful to read.
